This painting, I discovered this morning,
takes place at the confluence of the picnic,
our hot forest fire summer, and the transformation
of the regular bear into the Spirit Bear.
Life needs humour and pleasure to go along with
the hardship and sadness that we must endure,
so it's now called:
"Spirit Bear's Sooty Summer:Picnic's over-Tranformation

"Moose" aka "I have called you by your name: You are mine" will be going to the framer's first thing tomorrow & then to his new home. He's big, my Moose - 48" X 68" in the shadow box frame, which is an architectural delight!

I think she's done...
48" X 62"
pastel, ink & acrylic wash, on vintage map of
First Nations, & Early European settlements, on Fabriano paper.

Moose by Moonlight, 2016

Another of my massive drawings on the very heavy handmade paper that I order from Sennelier in Paris.
I think they get it from India.
It is rough and irregular...very difficult to work on, but worth every terrifying minute.
It is 48" X 68".

Today I'm working on the calf.
I want the calf to look surreal, vision-like.
I'm also putting a swarm of blackflies around the North wind's head.
I've spent too many summers in the northern woods to leave those darlings out.
Don't know if you can see them in the photo though...they're tiny ;-)))

The 3 text sections are:
Verses from Mon Pays, by Gilles Vigneault
(the best & most accurate description of the Canada I know & love),
references to the Aurora Borealis from
Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden & Homer,
and an excerpt from Dr John Rae's letter
describing his search for the bodies of Franklin's crew.

"Love's Flight (with crows)", a  series of 4 large charcoal and dry pastel drawings, each 24" X 48", created during the months of February and March 2012, is based on a Dresden candelabra that has been passed down the female line of my family for generations.  This piece has always fascinated me and came to me with endless tales of romance and drama from my maternal grandmother and her grandmother before her, through my mother. As the only "daughter of the house" I was responsible for the decoration of the reception rooms and tables during all festivities starting in my very earliest childhood. I remember the first time I was allowed to move this magical candelabra from the china cabinet to the dining room table by myself. In my young mind I held in my hands the entire history of my family. I was a serious child and I was terrified. This is the life of the candelabra after we've left the room in my child's eye.

Other drawings from various series including "The Othered Other".
